AshbyPlace was once surrounded by a traditional lawn, but during California’s 2020 drought, water conservation became a priority. In response, it was decided to slowly replace the water-thirsty grass with more sustainable, water-wise landscape. By incorporating natural elements such as rocks and tree branches, it is gradually transforming the garden into a space that is both environmentally responsible and visually appealing. With full western sun and filtered light in other areas, the home’s unique setting provides an ideal environment for the garden’s growth.

This garden represents how even small spaces can carry great historical meaning. As part of the AshbyPlace property and its larger story, it strengthens the case for landmark designation by reflecting the values of stewardship and community pride that have endured since the area’s transformation.

Downed branches from a storm were used as terracing material for this evolving garden. At the AshbyPlace we believe in sustainability by using what is available and reusable.
